The best way to find what you are looking for on the Web is to search with the right tool. There are several differnt tools available: Search Engines, Directories, and Metasearch Engines. A search engine is a computer program which searches the Internet for keywords and returns a list of Internet sites which contain those keywords. These tools generally returns a very large number of hits, so its real advantage is in searching for obscure information. A Directory is like a search engine, but its content is maintained by people. When you search for information in a directory site, the search is only performed on the sites which have been registered in that directory. This increases the quality of the hits you get because people decide what you will get instead of a computer program. A Metasearch Engine is a search engine which searches other search engines. When you use a metasearch engine, the list of sites returned to you is composed of the top 10 hits of approximately 7 search engines for the keywords you entered. For that reason, a metasearch engine will usually return good quality sites. Look here to Choose the Best Search for Your Information Needs, to determine which of the below Search Engines, Directories, or Metasearch Engines to use. |
